Master Tan - Shuang Yang

Master Tan Soh Tin of Singapore demonstrating the Shuang Yang Pei Ho Rou Rouan Chien or Sun Frost White Crane Soft and Gentle Art.

Master Tan is the only surviving teacher to have learned the art directly from Grandmaster Ang Lian Huat and therefore the leading authority on the art. All other teachers have learned from him, his students etc.

The Shuang Yang art is a soft (internal?) form of the Hokkien (Fukienese) Shaolin White Crane Art.

This video shows Master Tan demonstrating the art probably in 1996 in Epsom, England. The sound track is an interview recorded with him in late 2012 in the Nam Yang Mountain Retreat, Thailand.

It is noticeable that over the 17 years or so since this video was recorded the way in which Master Tan performs this routine has changed slightly. It is living art and, as the most senior Master, he is constantly refining it.

The interview is unscripted and reveals the genuine feelings of a master who has practised this art from the age of 8 to the age of 70! Unusually for a Chinese Kung Fu Master, Master Tan’s English is extremely good allowing him to communicate with real clarity. The quality of the video reflects its age but is of genuine historical interest.

Tong Ling Qi Gong

Master Huang was born in Guelin China and studied Chi Kung from an early age. He subsequently studied Chinese Martial Arts at two different Chinese universities. Tong Ling Chi Kung is his system. In the early 1990s he was appointed Chi Kung Advisor to Nam Yang Pugilistic Association, Singapore. In 1996 he travelled to the UK along with Maters Tan Soh Tin and Tan Eng Hock as well as Steven Tam and several other Singaporeans. He conducted seminars, taught chi kung at the Nam Yang UK headquarters and coached Master Armstrong in his Chi Kung system. They subsequently all travelled together to Germany to demonstrate at a world kung fu championship being held there.

This video was filmed in Epsom, England, in 1996 for the national news although only a few seconds were actually screened. He performs only briefly for the cameras and is a little jet lagged – this was not intended for instructional purposes. It is, however, the clearest remaining footage of him demonstrating.

Shuang Yang

Here is my long awaited video of the ‘Shuang Yang’ routine! It has taken a while to finish because we really wanted to get the sound track right. Personally I think that the result is worth it – in fact I am really pleased!

Shuang Yang is a deep and complex art and to sum it up in words is a near impossibility. These are my personal thoughts on the art after spending half of my life so far practising. This is what it means to me.
